Pan is the closest moon to the body of Saturn. It's a walnut shaped moon that echos Saturn's wide belt around its equator. It is a Shepard moon that clears the path of the Encke Gap in the A Ring. It leaves two comet tails in its wake, that are each pulled toward the planet and toward the ring, causing a spiral pattern in the tails' appearance.

It was first photographed by Voyager 2, and prior to that, its existence was predicted based on the wavy edges in the Encke Gap caused by the gravitational disturbances of Pan. Later documentation by Cassini revealed more about its shape, and its shadow onto the rings was photographed.
